The Above the Eagles Project is a private study by Ned Makim of nesting Wedgetail Eagles not far from Inverell in northern NSW. There are two sites and cameras are carried in and out each time with filming lasting only about 15 minutes every 10 days to a fortnight to minimise disruption. It is run purely for the joy of learning about Wedgetail behaviour in the nest. It is shared here because wild things are always appreciated by those who hunt, who love wild places and wild creatures and those who choose to live life outdoors. For them and for myself, this whole thing is a labour of love...
For the first time since I started filming eagles nests in 2012, I was able to film a parent sitting on the eggs. No action in the video, just the parent looking around in a nest that has been relined with fresh leaves ready for the hatching. The video was shot from a different position on the gorge wall so as not to potentially disturb the sitting bird. Once the eaglets hatch I will move closer to the nest.
Persistent rain has made it difficult to access the area above the Big Gorge eagle nest, however, there was a nice surprise when I finally got there. There were two eaglets in the nest. This is only the second time in 10 years I have seen a pair make it this far. It is, however, the second time in this specific nest, in the past four seasons. The second eaglet in the background was so still I doubted it was eagle alive when I saw it but on inspection on a bigger screen it was clearly alive.
